How to Choose the Perfect Moisturizer
August 10, 2010

While it is essential to moisturize the skin on a daily basis, finding the right moisturizer for one's skin type can seem like a daunting challenge. It will be important to focus only on those products that meet the individual's unique skin care needs. Young skin and mature skin require different moisturizers as do oily skin, dry skin, combination skin, and sensitive skin. Moisturizers formulated for specific skin types will be of the most benefit. A proper moisturizer can help relieve dry, itchy skin, reduce breakouts, diminish the signs of aging, and protect skin from damage caused by elements such as the sun, wind, and cold.

Choosing a Moisturizer

When shopping for skin products such as moisturizers individuals need to determine the type of product that will best meet their overall skin care needs. Skin care and Anti Aging Products come in cream, lotion, gel and ointment form and should contain active natural ingredients that effectively moisturize and treat the skin.

Oily Skin

Individuals with oily skin will want to use a moisturizer that is oil-free and water-based lotions and gels. These light moisturizers often contain silicones. Silicones can have a slight drying or mattifying effect on the skin, which can be beneficial to oily skin. Mineral oils and mineral waxes should be avoided because these products can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

Dry Skin

Dry skin will benefit from moisturizers that are heavy and oil-based. These types of moisturizers will saturate the skin and help keep the skin from drying out. Cream moisturizers are an excellent option for individuals with dry skin. For individuals with extremely dry skin it will be important to use a moisturizer that contains emollients. Emollients work in two ways: to reduce the skin's moisture evaporation or loss and increase the skin's hydration and nourishment.

Combination Skin

Combination skin can be a bit more difficult to moisturize, but treating combination skin is not impossible. Individuals with combination skin will need to look for moisturizers that contain vitamin A retinols and alpha hydroxy acids. The best type of moisturizer for combination skin will be a water-based moisturizer either a lotion or a cream. Individuals can apply more or less of the moisturizer based on how dry or oily their skin is on any given day.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin needs hypoallergenic and fragrance free moisturizers and Skin Products that contain vitamins A and E. Moisturizers for sensitive skin should also contain a sunscreen of at least SPF15. Individuals with sensitive skin will need to apply the moisturizer after showering or cleansing, and they will want to avoid over-moisturizing.

Mature Skin vs Young Skin

Anti-aging moisturizers help keep young skin healthy, smooth, and well-hydrated. Moisturizers with alpha hydroxy acids, selenium, oligopeptides and Tropoelastin help prevent the onset and appearance of wrinkles in mature skin.
